STEPHEN LAWRIE
Stephen was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1953. He attended Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland for a year, leaving to take up commercial deer hunting in the South Island. Stephen first visited Sitka in 1973 and moved to Sitka in 1974. Steve was a commercial fisherman from 1975 through 2018. He owned and operated four different salmon trollers over that time. Stephen has exhibited artwork since 1984, prior to that he had pieces in various galleries, but his first solo show was in 1984, in Sitka. Stephen has several installations and sculptures around Alaska, publicly funded commissions. Today, Stephen works primarily on portraits, or “people paintings” that tell a story, and the occasional landscape.
